Maybe there was a reason I had a hard time finding information on the technique I had in mind.
I can admit that. But I'm not giving up yet.
Can anyone guess what I'm trying to do? (technique, not item, but that's not hard either)

I'm guessing you are trying to make cables without a cable needle???? I have used that technique, but only on sock or baby weight yarn.
Knitted dreadlocks? Ctuthlu (spelling :<) legs? If it is cableling without a needle, go to Annie Modesitt's work - she's great!
